JARDINE 'D' APARTMENTS
Kansas State University - Manhattan, Kansas
19 Units - 17,000 Square Feet
One of 26 original 1957 apartment buildings, Building D underwent a complete renovation as a prototype design for future renovations of additional similar buildings. The original two-story structure consisted of one- and two-bedroom single-story units connected by an exterior balcony/patio which extended the entire length of the building. Renovated interiors include one- and two-bedroom single-floor apartments, and two- or three-bedroom, two-story townhouses.
Each unit has a private balcony or patio, full kitchen, washer/dryer and individual mechanical equipment. All units are acoustically enhanced for increased privacy. Fire sprinkler and alarm systems are included as well.
Exterior renovations retain a large portion of the original brick, but the similarities between old and new stop there. They also include new doors, windows and the addition of lap siding. A third story was added to portions of the building, and new pitched/gabled rooflines are compatible with the architectural theme established by the redevelopment’s masterplan and new apartment construction completed in 2008.
The design also eliminated the front/back appearance of the former building. Instead, apartment entrances face all directions and integrates nicely into the well landscaped grounds, pedestrian paths and parking areas.
